The Prime Minister of Namibia has established the NEPIO Steering Committee by appointing a Nuclear Commissioner to coordinate nuclear energy preparations and ensure strategic oversight.

Appointment of the Nuclear Commissioner

John Titus, director of the Energy Department at the Ministry of Industrialization, Mines and Energy, has been appointed as the country's Nuclear Commissioner.

With this appointment, Titus will coordinate the technical program of the Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organisation and lead its secretariat.

Steering Committee and Strategic Objectives

Prime Minister Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare stated that the nuclear energy program is an investment in institutional, technical, and human capacity for future energy needs.

The NEPIO Steering Committee was formed to provide high-level policy coordination and strategic oversight under the guidance of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Uranium Reserves and Legal Developments

Namibia holds approximately seven percent of the world's uranium reserves and was the third-largest producer in 2024.

The Namibian government approved its first Nuclear Industry Strategy in October 2025, and earlier this year, the draft nuclear bill was released for public consultation.
