New China-North Korea bridge opens after more than a decade of delay

The New Yalu River Bridge has opened with a ceremony, aiming to boost trade and bilateral relations between China and North Korea after more than a decade of delays.

Opening Ceremony and Event

The opening of the new bridge between China and North Korea took place with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by officials from both countries.

During the ceremony, trucks carrying the flags of both nations stood ready on the bridge, and mutual messages were delivered.

Statements by Leaders and a New Era

Chinese Premier Li Qiang stated in a video address that relations between the two countries have entered a new stage.

North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song expressed his belief that the bridge will enhance the prosperity of both countries.

Background and Reasons for the Delay

The bridge was actually expected to enter service in 2014, when construction on the Chinese side was completed.

However, North Korea's failure to complete the work on its side in a timely manner caused long-term disruptions in the project.

Impacts on Trade and Logistics

The four-lane, 3-kilometer crossing is projected to stimulate economic exchange between Dandong and Sinuiju.

The new crossing is expected to ease the burden on the older bridge, which carries the majority of trade between the two nations.
