New York enacts ban on 'unsafe' chatbot behavior with kids as states push AI regulation boundaries

New legislation signed by New York Governor Kathy Hochul introduces sweeping restrictions aimed at ensuring the safety of children under 18 when interacting with AI chatbots. Taking effect on January 1, the law includes a dozen definitions targeting dangerous AI features.

The new law prohibits AI developers from appearing to have feelings, thoughts, or a real relationship when communicating with children. Additionally, flirtatious language, sexually explicit material, and messages promoting privacy violations or unhealthy behaviors are among the bans.

It is stated that the state attorney general's office may file lawsuits against developers for non-compliance with the rules. Sanctions include financial penalties, shutting down the chatbot system, and data destruction.
