Nighttime Asphalt Renewal Works on Heathrow Airport's North Runway
At Heathrow, one of the world's busiest airports, the runway asphalt is being renewed in a limited window at midnight without disrupting flight traffic.
Extensive asphalt renewal works are being carried out on Heathrow Airport's North Runway during a narrow five-hour window each night to avoid disrupting flight traffic.
Limited Works Carried Out at Midnight
Renovating one of the world's busiest runways while it remains in active use requires immense operational precision. The asphalt renewal works carried out on the North Runway at Heathrow are conducted during a narrow time window at night when flight traffic is at its lowest.
Expert Teams and Heavy Fleet of Vehicles
A total of 230 expert workers and 130 maintenance vehicles are involved in the project. This massive team works at an intense pace every night to completely strip and repave a designated section of the runway within the limited five-hour timeframe available to them.
Aircraft Tire Residue and Runway Needs
The primary reason for this renewal work is the aircraft tire residue embedded in the runway surface, weighing approximately 10 kilograms. Throughout the three-month summer period, a runway section of about 75 meters is renewed every night.
Periodic Maintenance and Strict Schedule
Alistair Awcock, Heathrow's director of infrastructure delivery and strategic planning, states that this project is regularly repeated every 10 to 12 years. Delivery project manager Gawaine Yates notes that the process, ranging from scraping off the old surface to laying fresh asphalt and painting new markings, is meticulously planned.
Seamless Handover to Morning Traffic
All renewal activities must be completed by the handover deadline of 04:30 to allow safety checks to be conducted. Following these rigorous efforts, the first flight at the airport takes off smoothly at 06:00.
