Scientists have discovered two metal alloys that maintain their resistance to fracture even at extremely low temperatures. The niobium-titanium-based alloys stand out by showing no brittleness at approximately minus 253 degrees Celsius, revealing a remarkable microscopic process.

The results of a collaborative study by researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and the University of Oxford were published in the journal Nature. While it is known that metals can normally lose their ability to bend in extreme cold and minor cracks can lead to sudden fractures, two experimental alloys developed reacted differently at minus 253 degrees Celsius. Experts emphasized that this does not mean the cooling process completely changes the properties of the metals, but rather that an unusual microscopic process providing resistance to cracking has been discovered.

Dong Liu from the University of Oxford, one of the authors of the study, stated that the research paves the way for developing structural metals for cryogenic environments. In this context, it is evaluated that these alloys could be used in sectors that may encounter challenging temperatures, such as energy, transportation, and aviation.
