A new psychological study conducted by Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) has revealed that even when artificial intelligence models exhibit human-like behaviors and responsiveness, people do not attribute consciousness to AI.

Scope of the Research

Researchers at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany examined how artificial intelligence systems exhibiting human-like behaviors are perceived by society.

Published in the journal Cognition, the study is based on experimental processes carried out with over 1,100 participants.

Comparison of Humans and Artificial Intelligence

The researchers divided the participants into two groups to test the same scenarios, comparing artificial intelligence with human characters.

The data obtained showed that even the most advanced AI model lagged behind the most passive human and was categorized as lacking consciousness.

The Boundary Between Perception and Consciousness

Participants accepted the AI's perception of surrounding data under the concept of awareness.

However, when it came to subjective experience, emotion, and internal mental life, they did not attribute the concept of consciousness to AI.

Exaggerated Language of Technology Companies

Experts emphasized that technology companies acting out of marketing concerns attribute human qualities to artificial intelligence.

It was reported that society does not place the human mind and artificial intelligence on the same scale, and that misleading concepts such as consciousness should be avoided in promotions.
