NTT Data Group to Build Data Center for Anthropic in Osaka
NTT Data Group is preparing to build a massive data center in Osaka for the US-based artificial intelligence company Anthropic.
NTT Data Group is in final talks to build a dedicated data center in Japan's Osaka Prefecture for the U.S. AI developer Anthropic.
Project Details and Cost
Expected to be the first dedicated facility established in Japan for the artificial intelligence company Anthropic, the project's cost is projected to reach 1 trillion yen, or approximately $6.3 billion.
Agreement and Timeline
NTT Data Group, a subsidiary of the NTT group, and Anthropic aim to sign an agreement by the end of the 2026 fiscal year, which concludes by March of next year.
Partial operations of the planned facility are anticipated to begin as early as 2028.
Capacity and Energy Requirements
The facility in question is expected to have a total power intake capacity of 500 megawatts, making it one of the largest data centers in the country.
Since procuring 500 megawatts of energy from the grid will take time, alternatives such as on-site generation and fuel cells are being evaluated within the scope of the project.
Companies Avoid Making Statements
NTT Data Group, a subsidiary of Japanese telecommunications giant NTT, declined to comment on the matter in a statement to Nikkei, while Anthropic also offered no evaluation.
Investments and Goals in Japan
The Japanese government has designated data centers and cloud computing among 17 strategic sectors, aiming to mobilize public and private sector investments in these areas by the 2035 fiscal year.
