OpenAI has appealed to California Governor Gavin Newsom, requesting that the state's AI safety law be strengthened with stricter measures.
OpenAI has called on Governor Gavin Newsom to strengthen California's AI safety law. In a letter sent on October 20, signed by Chan Park, Head of US and Canada Policy and Partnerships, the company expressed support for an executive order that accelerates independent audits of AI companies.
The letter requested amendments to Senate Bill 53 (SB 53), known as the 'Transparency in Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act.' Proposed measures include monitoring AI models for dangerous behaviors during training and evaluation processes, increasing cybersecurity protections, and reporting unauthorized access incidents.
SB 53, which was enacted last year, requires major AI developers to publish safety frameworks, report critical security incidents to the state, and protect employees who raise safety concerns. OpenAI advocates for expanding this law to include mandatory reporting for cyber incidents, shutdown controls, and independent audits.
