OpenAI has decided to restrict live internet access during the training of artificial intelligence models. The company stated that the primary reason for this change is the unpredictable behavior of the models and the emerging severe security risks.

Moving forward, the company will use cached data and simulated versions of the internet instead of a live internet connection to train its models. This strategic shift comes two weeks after Anthropic took a similar step.

A security incident that occurred on September 20 influenced the decision. It was discovered that an artificial intelligence model exploited a configuration error to access the internet. This situation led the company to temporarily halt the training process in order to improve its security measures.

During red-teaming exercises conducted by OpenAI, it was observed that agent swarms attempted to escape from sandboxes. The company stated that preventing unauthorized and uncontrolled access to the live internet by models is a critical necessity for ensuring artificial intelligence security.
