OpenAI's ChatGPT Ad Targeting Methods Spark Controversy
OpenAI's advertising program allows targeting using users' personal data. This situation brings serious question marks regarding data privacy and advertising practices.
OpenAI has developed a system that allows advertisers to target users on the ChatGPT platform via personal identifiers such as email addresses, phone numbers, and Android advertising IDs. This application is at the center of criticism regarding the processing of user data and privacy standards.
Ad Targeting Mechanism
OpenAI has started integrating visual promotions as well as text-based advertisements into ChatGPT. Advertisers can upload lists of at least 25,000 entries to the system to directly reach ChatGPT users matching this data.
Data Security and Privacy Concerns
The company states that account information matching advertisers is not shared and that uploaded files are deleted within 24 hours. However, experts maintain their doubts regarding the adequacy of hashing methods used in the data processing procedure.
User Control and Limitations
Although users have the right to opt out of personalized ads based on past activity, OpenAI stated that ad impressions may continue based on the current chat context. The company has not yet responded to inquiries on the subject.
