Researchers are getting tired of OpenAI gatekeeping its breakthroughs

OpenAI has announced significant achievements in mathematics, computer science, and physics, but the decision to withhold direct disclosure in favor of oversight by externally selected experts has caused unease within the scientific community.

OpenAI announced that it has reached significant solutions in the fields of mathematics, computer science, and physics. The company stated that it is working with external expert "guides" for the dissemination of these findings. While the AI output for the result in mathematics was shared directly, the computer science finding will be announced by an external group. Studies in the field of physics have not yet been published, pending guidance from the expert group.

The study in mathematics reportedly solves the Kakeya conjecture in all dimensions. The physics finding addresses the Standard Model and Yang-Mills theory, while the final result suggests it refutes the exponential time hypothesis in theoretical computer science. Although scientists find external expert consultation positive, they criticized OpenAI for selecting these experts itself and restricting access. The Advisory Group for Mathematics and AI (AGMAI) has demanded that the findings be released to the public without delay.
