Patent Registration for UV-C Sterilization System in Afyon
A UV-C sterilization system developed jointly by three institutions in Afyonkarahisar to prevent virus transmission originating from mechanical ventilators has been patented.
The UV-C sterilization system, developed through the collaboration of Afyon Kocatepe University, Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University, and Afyonkarahisar State Hospital to prevent aerosol virus transmission originating from mechanical ventilators, has received a utility model registration from the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office.
The invention titled "UV-C Sterilizer Preventing Aerosol Virus (COVID-19) Transmission Originating from Mechanical Ventilator", brought to life through the joint work of universities and a healthcare institution in Afyonkarahisar, received a utility model certificate from the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office with the application number 2021/006861. Carried out within the scope of the Turkish Health Institutes Directorate (TÜSEB) Group D Support Program, the project aims to reduce the risk of infection transmission via aerosols that may originate from mechanical ventilation devices in intensive care units.
Designed with a closed-loop UV-C light source, the system is integrated into the air outlet line of the ventilator device, exposing the exhaled air to ultraviolet rays. Prof. Dr. Uğur Fidan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sadık Kağa from AKÜ Faculty of Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elif Kağa from AFSÜ Faculty of Pharmacy, and Specialist Dr. Ahmet Murat Koyuncu from Afyonkarahisar State Hospital served as inventors in the project. The system also underwent clinical trials with the participation of volunteer patients in the Intensive Care Unit of Afyonkarahisar State Hospital.
