The Pentagon has launched a new strategic preparedness initiative to operate United States military bases continuously for at least 90 days without external support against the risk of a potential major global war disrupting electrical grids and supply chains.

This military initiative, named FORTRESS, was implemented with the assessment that dependence on civilian infrastructure systems poses an unacceptable risk to national defense. Under the project, all major military facilities in the continental U.S. are planned to sustain their essential needs such as electricity, water, fuel, and communications independently from the outside.

In line with the initiative, the establishment of portable nuclear reactors, large-scale battery storage systems, and microgrids is envisioned. Additionally, it aims to create strategic reserves for ammunition, fuel, critical minerals, electronic components, spare parts, and medical supplies, while involving the civilian manufacturing sector in wartime mobilization through the Civil Reserve Manufacturing Network.
