Wall blown over by Storm Boelo in Whitby sparks AI images debate

In Whitby, North Yorkshire, England, the collapse of a stone wall in a historic churchyard during Storm Boelo, which damaged nearby vehicles, has sparked a debate about artificial intelligence on social media. The real photos, taken by business owner Sue Taylor and verified by independent witnesses and footage, were questioned by internet users who claimed they were produced by AI.

The stone wall in the historic cemetery near Whitby Abbey collapsed under the impact of Storm Boelo, causing damage to parked vehicles. Business owner Sue Taylor, who took clear photos of the scene, shared the images on her Facebook account. Although eyewitnesses, other photos, and video recordings confirmed the authenticity of these images, many social media users suggested that the photos were produced with AI or manipulated.

Prof. Theocharis Kyriacou, an AI expert from York St John University, stated that the orderly appearance of the fallen rocks might seem unusual to viewers, but that real photos are increasingly being met with suspicion due to the misuse of generative AI. This incident has brought digital reliability industry discussions, such as a previous deepfake case in North Yorkshire and student policies, back to the agenda.
