Pneumonia warning for patients whose condition worsens during recovery
Internal Medicine Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Attila Önmez warned that the recurrence of symptoms after recovery from respiratory tract infections may indicate serious complications such as pneumonia.
The recurrence of complaints after the recovery process in respiratory tract infections, which increase with seasonal transitions, is considered risky by experts as it may be a harbinger of complications such as pneumonia.
Internal Medicine Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Önmez stated that in cases where symptoms such as a recurring fever, intensified cough, and shortness of breath appear, medical evaluation should be performed without wasting time. Önmez pointed out that such situations may indicate that the infection has progressed to the lower respiratory tract.
Reminding that antibiotics have no therapeutic effect in viral upper respiratory tract infections, Önmez warned that unconscious drug use can lead to antibiotic resistance. It was stated that individuals with chronic conditions such as diabetes, COPD, asthma, and heart failure may experience infections more severely.
Hand hygiene, ventilation of indoor environments, and avoiding contact with sick individuals are recommended to protect against infections. Having individuals in the risk group vaccinated upon a physician's recommendation plays a critical role in preventing serious complications.
