Prime Minister Babis's Party Suffers Unexpected Defeat in Czech Senate Elections
Opposition parties secured a majority in the Czech Senate elections, while Prime Minister Andrej Babis's ANO party failed to win a single seat.
In the Senate elections held in the Czech Republic, leading opposition parties won the most votes, while Prime Minister Andrej Babis's ANO party failed to secure any of the seats it contested. Prime Minister Babis described the election outcome as a "disaster."
In the second-round elections held for the renewed seats in the 81-member upper house, the ruling ANO party failed to achieve expected success. While opposition parties maintained their dominance in the Senate in the country of 10.9 million, the pro-European Mayors and Independents party became the most successful group by winning 10 out of 14 candidacies. Civic Democrats secured 7 seats.
The election results are not expected to directly destabilize the Eurosceptic coalition government consisting of far-right and right-wing parties. The fact that the lower house is the country's main legislative body and can override Senate vetoes clears the way for the government's legislative activities. Nevertheless, the Senate plays a critical role in the approval of constitutional amendments, the confirmation of presidential appointments to the Constitutional Court, and the election of the speaker of parliament, the state's second-highest official.
Despite the election defeat, the ANO party continues to maintain its lead in national opinion polls. The government is loosening its fiscal policies to increase salaries, pensions, and transport investments, which draws criticism in a country that is traditionally in favor of austerity.
