Pumpkin Carving Artist Mike Valladao Celebrates 40th Anniversary
Systems engineer Mike Valladao, known as the 'Picasso of Pumpkin Carvers,' celebrated his 40-year artistic journey at the Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival.
Mike Valladao, who works as a systems engineer in the cybersecurity industry, marked his 40th anniversary in the art of pumpkin carving, which he has been practicing since the mid-1980s, at the Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival.
Known for his orange overalls and farmer's hat, Valladao, nicknamed 'Farmer Mike,' transforms giant pumpkins into intricate figures, faces, and pop culture characters. Despite having no formal art training, he uses a technique developed through observation to turn Atlantic-variety pumpkins weighing between 100 and 1,000 pounds into three-dimensional sculptures.
Valladao notes that he applies his engineering discipline to his art, carving the pumpkins layer by layer. The artist, who has received invitations from prestigious venues such as the San Diego Zoo and the California Academy of Sciences, accepts the ephemeral nature of his work and prefers not to name his pieces. After 40 years, Valladao remains determined to continue his art, expressing that this pursuit is a passion for him.
