A new study has determined that content shared on TikTok regarding breast reduction surgeries is largely produced by patients and, despite receiving high engagement, has very poor informational quality.

Scope and Methodology of the Study

A cross-sectional analysis of 140 TikTok videos related to breast reduction procedures was conducted to evaluate content characteristics, informational quality, engagement patterns, and user sentiments.

Content Creators and Subject Distribution

It was found that the vast majority of the analyzed videos, namely 89 percent, were created by patients and predominantly focused on postoperative experiences at a rate of 75 percent.

Relationship Between Engagement and Informational Quality

Based on median values, videos received over 3,860 likes, 131 comments, and more than 194 shares, while overall informational quality was noted to be quite low and received poor scores from evaluators.

Video Duration and Reliability

It was observed that videos receiving more likes and shares contained fewer reliable health details, yet they were shorter videos offering lower-quality content.

Artificial Intelligence Performance

While sentiment analysis of user comments showed that responses were predominantly positive, it was revealed that the Claude artificial intelligence tool exhibited a much higher level of agreement with the human review team compared to ChatGPT.
