'Tokens Are Cheap': Open Source Subreddit Bans AI

Reddit's r/opensource community has banned projects involving or focused on artificial intelligence (AI) through new rules announced by moderator Wolvereness. The moderator stated that current AI technologies are incompatible with the open-source philosophy, emphasizing that projects should not contain traces of AI usage.

Under the new rules, it is prohibited to share projects on the r/opensource platform that are generated by AI, use AI, or are designed for AI models. Moderator Wolvereness stated that while 'tokens' are cheap, this technology does not align with the community's core values. Additionally, non-English posts and accounts or projects newer than one year have also been included in the restrictions.

The decision has caused a significant stir in the open-source world. At a time when figures like Linux kernel developer Linus Torvalds are utilizing AI tools for coding, it is noted that this ban sets the community apart from other platforms. Following the ban, an alternative community called r/TrueOpenSource, which allows the use of AI, was established. Moderator Wolvereness expressed hope that this new community would serve as a refuge for users affected by the bans.
