Reinforcement and conservation works for the mihrab dome are starting in Hagia Sophia

As part of the most comprehensive restoration project in the history of the Republic launched at the world cultural heritage Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, a new phase is being entered for the reinforcement and conservation of the eastern semi-dome while works on the main dome continue.

Restoration and Conservation Process

Comprehensive restoration, conservation, and reinforcement works carried out to protect the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque and safely transfer it to future generations are meticulously ongoing. The project, carried out by the Directorate General of Foundations in line with the decisions of the Science Board and the Conservation Board, continues its applications on the main dome.

Works Carried Out on the Main Dome

While mosaic conservation continues on the steel platform established for the main dome, dust cleaning and applications to protect mosaic surfaces are being carried out on the erected working scaffolding. In addition, while the installation of a temporary steel roof over the main dome has been completed, works for the controlled opening of lead coatings are also ongoing.

Decision for the Eastern Semi-Dome

Modeling and static analyses performed by experts determined that the eastern semi-dome needs to be reinforced. Along with structural reinforcement applications, conservation works will be carried out on the mosaics and hand-drawn decorations on the inner surface of the semi-dome.

Mihrab Wall and Platform Installation

Cleaning, conservation, and repair applications will also be carried out on the marble surfaces located on the mihrab wall in the eastern direction. In order to carry out the works in a safe and controlled manner, the installation of a steel working platform that will provide access to the inner surface of the eastern semi-dome will begin.

Worship Order and Protection Measures

Before the platform installation, the boundaries of the working area will be established, and specially printed tarpaulins will be prepared to preserve the visual integrity of the structure's interior. A temporary mihrab and minbar will be placed for the continuation of the worship order, and original architectural elements will be secured with physical protection systems.

Statements by Minister Ersoy

Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy stated in a post on his social media account that the works in Hagia Sophia are progressing in accordance with the planned schedule and announced that a new phase will be entered in the eastern semi-dome.
