Climber’s body plucked from California mountain after storm

The lifeless body of a climber who lost his life while climbing Mount Whitney in California was retrieved from the area on Sunday following a severe storm and snowfall. The Inyo County Sheriff's Office shared details about the efforts conducted regarding the incident.

The Inyo County Sheriff's Office stated that on October 19, an employee at a motel in Lone Pine reported a guest who had not checked out of their room and had left personal belongings behind. As a result of the investigations, the climber's vehicle was located in the Whitney Portal area at an elevation of approximately 2,500 meters. Through coordination with the U.S. Forest Service, it was confirmed that the climber held a climbing permit dated October 18 for the Mountaineer's Route, one of the steep and technical routes used to reach the summit.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter spotted the deceased climber on the Mountaineer's Route last Tuesday; however, a storm system entering the region created snow and dangerous weather conditions, delaying search and rescue efforts. On Sunday, a search and rescue team advancing through the snow and ice-covered terrain reached the climber's remains at an elevation of approximately 4,145 meters, and the body was evacuated from the area by helicopter and transferred to the Inyo County coroner's office for identification.
