Remembering the Levantines in Istanbul's Memory Exhibition Opened
Organized by the Levantine Culture and Heritage Preservation Association, the exhibition met with visitors at the İstiklal Art Gallery.
Prepared by the Levantine Culture and Heritage Preservation Association, the exhibition "The Levantines of Istanbul, Istanbul's Levantines" opened its doors at the İstiklal Art Gallery. Focusing on the lives of Levantine families who left their mark on 19th-century Istanbul, the exhibition can be visited until November 8.
As part of the relations between the Ottoman Empire and the European and Mediterranean worlds, Levantine families have contributed to the city's multicultural life since the 19th century. Today, many buildings seen on İstiklal Avenue bear the signatures of these families and architects. Founded five years ago, the Levantine Culture and Heritage Preservation Association aims to remind people of this heritage through the exhibition prepared by Prof. Dr. Seza Sinanlar Uslu.
Organized in cooperation with the Beyoğlu Municipality and the French Cultural Center in Turkey, the ground floor of the exhibition offers an overview of the Ottoman geography, while the lower floor features a journey related to 10 families. The stories of figures such as architect Alexander Vallaury, the Reboul family who created the Rebul brand, Spadora Pasha, and painter Albert Louis Mille who founded Academy Sinan are conveyed to visitors. The exhibition will continue to welcome visitors until November 8.
