Report completed on exercise involving Iranian warships in South Africa
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has received a confidential report investigating a naval exercise that included Iranian warships, despite his instructions to the contrary.
The investigation report commissioned by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa regarding the participation of Iranian warships in a naval exercise held off the coast of Cape Town earlier this year has been completed.
A statement from the Presidency on Tuesday confirmed that the investigation, led by a retired judge, has concluded and the report has been submitted to Ramaphosa. The report will remain confidential until it has been reviewed by the President.
The participation of Iran in the exercise, which also included China and Russia in January, coincided with a period of high tension between the United States and Iran. In the investigation launched in February, Ramaphosa aimed to determine why his instructions for Iranian ships not to participate in the exercise were not followed. The inquiry focuses on whether this order was ignored by senior officials of the South African armed forces or the Ministry of Defence.
