Responding to cyberbullying with insults can lead to legal liability
Officials from the Antalya Police Department warned that reacting to digital bullying with insults or threats can turn the victim into a legally guilty party.
Police Officer Gülşen Ünsal from the Antalya Police Department's Cyber Crimes Bureau stated that individuals subjected to cyberbullying who respond to the other party with insults or threats may find themselves facing legal liability.
Wrong reactions to bullying
Stating that humiliating and mocking comments encountered on social media platforms turn into cyberbullying, Gülşen Ünsal emphasized that children and young people who are victims responding to this situation with messages containing insults or threats constitute a new crime.
Correct intervention methods
Experts state that individuals facing cyberbullying should report and block the relevant account via the social media platform instead of entering into an argument. In serious cases such as threats or blackmail, it is stated that law enforcement agencies should be consulted.
Legal consequences of digital crimes
Actions committed over the internet such as insult, blackmail, harassment, and fraud have no legal difference from crimes committed in the physical environment. Actions such as illegal betting and inciting the public to hatred and hostility are also evaluated as crimes within the scope of the laws.
Conscious internet usage
It is of great importance for young people to share the negative situations they encounter with their families in order to act more safely in the digital world. Being conscious of the legal consequences of actions in the internet environment prevents grievances from growing.
