Silent danger in bone resorption: First symptom may be a hip fracture
Assoc. Prof. Dr. İbrahim Halil Erdem, President of the Turkish Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Association, stated in a statement on the occasion of World Osteoporosis Day that bone resorption can progress silently and the first symptom can be a hip fracture.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. İbrahim Halil Erdem, President of the Turkish Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Association (TFTR), made evaluations on the protection of bone health, early diagnosis of osteoporosis, and reduction of fracture risk within the scope of October 20 World Osteoporosis Day.
Osteoporosis is a significant public health problem that reduces bone strength, increases the risk of fractures, and often progresses without causing pain or symptoms. Patients usually become aware of their condition after a fracture occurs. Fractures most commonly seen in the spine, hip, and wrist can lead to serious consequences such as long-term immobility, decreased muscle strength, and dependency.
Although the disease is more common in women, especially after menopause, it can also occur in men. Advanced age, a family history of hip fracture, low body weight, smoking, physical inactivity, and long-term use of certain medications increase the risk of fracture. Individuals carrying risk factors are recommended to undergo evaluation by a physician without waiting for complaints.
Bone mineral density measurement is planned by taking into account age, gender, past fractures, and risk factors. In osteoporosis, which can be managed with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, the goal is not only to increase bone density, but also to preserve the individual's mobility, daily living activities, and independence.
