Sinop Governor Dr. Mustafa Özarslan teaching doctoral students at the Sinop University Faculty of Sport Sciences, despite his background in Political Science and Sociology, has raised questions in academic circles.
At Sinop University Faculty of Sport Sciences, Sinop Governor Dr. Mustafa Özarslan—who has an academic background in Political Science and Sociology—teaching the "Turkish Sports and International Comparisons" course to doctoral students has sparked debates in academic circles and the public sphere.
It was stated that following the visit of Sinop University Faculty of Sport Sciences Dean and Head of Department Prof. Dr. Erkal Arslanoğlu on August 22, 2025, instructions were given to the Graduate Education Institute on September 5, 2025, to assign expert personnel for the relevant course. Following this process, Governor Dr. Mustafa Özarslan began teaching doctoral students.
Governor Özarslan undertaking this duty despite having an academic background in Political Science and Sociology rather than specializing in sport sciences or sports management raised questions regarding compliance with academic traditions, especially given the presence of numerous professors, associate professors, and assistant professors at the faculty. It was reported that Governor Mustafa Özarslan, when called to obtain his views on the matter, did not return calls and messages.
