Serbia Arrests Six People Suspected of Plotting Election-Day Violence

Serbian police detained six people ahead of Sunday's snap general election on suspicion of preparing acts of violence against the police and political opponents.

In a statement from the prosecution office, it was stated that five people detained in the city of Novi Sad are accused of inciting the forcible overthrow of high state authorities. It was stated that the suspects were gathering people to be brought to the capital, Belgrade, to attack the police and political opponents on election day.

The sixth suspect, detained in Belgrade, was noted to be tasked with training mobile teams for physical clashes almost as if preparing for war. Sunday's election will take place between a list supported by former President Aleksandar Vucic, who resigned last month following 18 months of protests and aims to continue his rule as prime minister, and a group of student-backed candidates promising to fight corruption.
