Smart wristband project for miners by primary school students
Primary school students from Malatya won second place in Turkey at TEKNOFEST with their smart wristband project that monitors miners' health in real-time and sends alerts in dangerous situations.
Students at Malatya Kazım Karabekir Primary School developed the "There is Breath Smart Miner Life Tracking System Project," which monitors the health and movement status of underground miners and sends alerts to the control center in case of potential risks. The project won an award at TEKNOFEST Southeast.
Kazım Karabekir Primary School 4/B grade students Tuğrahan Altuntaş, Ekrem Duha İncebay, Ali Doğan Kaplan, Rıza Poyraz, Şura Kılıç, and Elif Nida Demir brought the "There is Breath Smart Miner Life Tracking System Project" to life under the coordination of their advising teacher, Hatice Akyüz. Designed by the Deep Breath Team, the prototype monitors miners' pulse, body temperature, and movements, providing audible warnings and transmitting signals to the control center during abnormal situations.
This developed system was deemed worthy of second place in Turkey within the Primary School Level of the Healthier Living Category of the Technologies for Humanity Competition held under the scope of TEKNOFEST Southeast. Advising teacher Hatice Akyüz stated that they set out with the goal of providing real-time tracking of miners' health conditions and delivering rapid assistance in emergencies.
The wristbands feature pulse, temperature, and motion sensors, and data from these sensors can be tracked via a panel at the control center. The system begins to signal in cases of dropped or elevated pulse, temperature changes, and excessive movement or lack of movement. Furthermore, the installation of gas sensors in work areas to detect gas-related hazards and an internet-accessible control panel infrastructure are also planned.
Principal Davut Güney shared his pride in the achieved ranking, while team captain Tuğrahan Altuntaş noted that they aimed to find solutions to the problems miners experience underground. Ekrem Duha İncebay expressed that their goal is to guide the technical team against risks encountered by miners and reduce the risk to save lives.
