Social media restrictions for children under 15 begin in Turkey
Within the scope of the regulation legalized by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), social media restrictions for children under 15 are coming into effect as of November 1, 2026. While age verification via e-Government is mandatory for new memberships, a period until March 31, 2027, has been granted for existing accounts.
The new legal process regulating the use of social media by children under 15 in Turkey begins on November 1, 2026. The regulation adopted by the TBMM makes the e-Government-backed age verification system mandatory for account creation processes on platforms.
With the new regulation, users will verify their age through a digital code they will obtain via e-Government. This method aims to prevent identity information from being shared directly with social media platforms. Existing account holders are required to complete this verification process by March 31, 2027. The closure of accounts belonging to users who fail to perform the operation by the specified date or who are determined to be under 15 is on the agenda.
For teenagers in the 15-18 age group, additional measures are planned, such as keeping accounts private on platforms, limiting follower lists, live stream restrictions, blocking screenshots, and limiting the infinite scrolling feature. Authorities warned citizens against fraudulent activities during this process, stating that attention must be paid to attempts to capture personal information through fake SMS messages and emails.
