Supply-demand imbalance in Vietnam's technology exchanges: Low interest in 62,000 products
Out of 62,548 products offered on technology platforms in Vietnam, only 750 have seen demand. The Ministry of Science and Technology is launching a new collaboration model to overcome obstacles in research and commercialization processes.
At a national conference organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, it was announced that as of August 22, 2026, only 750 out of 62,548 products listed on technology exchanges had found buyers. These data highlighted structural difficulties in the commercialization of research results and the disconnect between the market and academia.
According to the data shared at the conference, only 72 successful transactions with a total value of 11.233 billion VND took place on the exchanges in the January-August period of 2026. Ministry officials stated that the problem is not just a lack of funding, but also the organizational form of collaboration, pricing uncertainties, and the lack of compliance of products with market standards.
Assessment: Current data, combined with the fact that the ratio of R&D expenditures of businesses in Vietnam to GDP remains at 0.3% and the low rate of small businesses participating in innovation activities, indicates a serious capacity problem in the technology transfer process.
The Ministry plans to implement a new mechanism starting from the fourth quarter of 2026 that will strengthen the bond between universities, research institutes, and businesses. In this context, an integrated model is targeted where businesses determine their needs from the outset, the state shares the risks, and commercialization processes are managed more transparently.
