Why Zelensky Took the Gloves Off This Time With Trump

Ukrainian leaders have taken a harsher stance and reacted this openly for the first time against U.S. President Trump prioritizing Russian interests and downplaying Russian violence.

As daily attacks in Ukraine wear down the energy infrastructure and the economy, air defense systems remain weakened. U.S. President Trump's move to purchase Russian diesel, lift sanctions on Russia, and pressure Ukraine to stop hitting Russian oil refineries have increased tensions. Additionally, the Kyiv administration reported sudden restrictions on the Pentagon-backed satellite internet network, gaps in U.S. military intelligence sharing, and delays in the delivery of American interceptor missiles; however, American officials denied these disruptions.

Tensions peaked when Trump claimed that Russia was in a good position regarding Ukraine. According to United Nations data, civilian casualties in Ukraine increased by 85 percent compared to the same period last year. Despite these deep disagreements, the parties did not completely sever ties; Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and subsequently met with U.S. peace envoy Steve Witkoff in Oslo.
