The Era of Science and Technology in Agricultural Production in Vietnam
The use of science and technology in Vietnam's agricultural sector increases product value by 30-35%. While agricultural, forestry, and fishery exports reached $56.3 billion in the first nine months of 2026, the sector is turning to modern techniques and standards to increase efficiency.
In Vietnam, applications of science and technology are being widely promoted to stabilize agricultural production and increase product value in the face of climate change and changing market conditions. According to data from the General Statistics Office of the Ministry of Finance, exports of agriculture, forestry, and fishery products reached 56.3 billion US dollars in the first nine months of 2026, an increase of 7.8% compared to the same period last year.
VietGAP standards, organic farming, and high-technology applications provide an increase of around 30-35% in product value compared to traditional methods. While vegetable production meeting VietGAP standards in Hanoi generates an income of 450-500 million VND per hectare, this figure can rise to the level of 900 million VND for high-value products in greenhouse environments. In Phu Tho province, production using scientific methods is being encouraged across an area of 79,000 hectares.
Nguyen Quang Tin from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment stated that more than 80% of rice production has shifted to high-quality varieties and modern processing technologies have increased export value. However, experts emphasize that high-cost infrastructure investments, limited technology access, and unstable market conditions are the main obstacles facing the sector.
Assessment: Experts state that the success of the agricultural sector depends not only on increased production, but also on strengthening the chain from production to consumption through branding and distribution channels. Available data shows that technological transformation is still in its initial stages, as organic agriculture accounts for only 1.4% of total agricultural land.
