Following the rollout of its in-cabin voice assistant, Rivian has announced that it will run AI agents from various companies, such as Anthropic, in its vehicles in the future.

AI Assistant and Future Vision

Rivian recently launched an AI assistant that allows drivers and passengers to interact with vehicles by speaking. Speaking at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference, company founder and CEO RJ Scaringe stated that vehicles could run AI agents from different companies in the future.

In-Vehicle Software and Agent Framework

Instead of relying on Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, the company built its in-vehicle software from scratch, developing many applications in-house, including navigation. Rivian states that it has created an in-house framework that understands the actions users want to perform while speaking with the vehicle and directs them to the correct part of the software.

Safety Precautions and Operating Mechanism

It was explained that the system acts like a traffic light, deciding whether to use a local model on the vehicle or a cloud model depending on the complexity of the request. It was emphasized that vehicle-level controls such as brakes or steering will not be handed over to AI agents for safety reasons.
