The Impact of an AI-Powered Mental Health App on Social Well-Being
A study examining the effects of the AI mobile application named Flourish revealed positive developments in users' social well-being and mindfulness levels.
A randomized controlled trial conducted by Cachia and colleagues examined the effects of the AI-based Flourish app on users' social well-being, mindfulness, and positive emotional states.
Aim and Scope of the Study
Cachia and her team conducted a study to evaluate the effects of the AI mobile application, which offers personalized support, on users' mental health.
In this study, which involved university students, the potential of artificial intelligence technologies to provide accessible mental health support to broader populations was examined.
Features of the Flourish Application
Flourish is a generative AI application that offers personalized chats and activities aimed at improving emotional awareness, psychological resilience, and social bonding.
The app includes AI coaching, mood checks, personalized activities, and summaries of mood patterns.
Research Methodology and Participants
A total of 486 undergraduate students recruited from three higher education institutions in the United States were randomly assigned to either the app access group or the control group.
Participants in the Flourish group were asked to use the application at least twice a week, and researchers reported an average of 3.49 active usage days weekly.
Findings and Results Obtained
Assessments conducted during the study showed positive developments in positive affect, loneliness, belonging, resilience, and mindfulness tendencies among Flourish users.
While positive affect and mindfulness levels were found to be higher in the application group at week six, no significant differences were observed in changes regarding depression, anxiety, and stress.
