How AI drones are influencing the course of the Ukraine war

Following Russia's 2022 invasion, Ukrainian tech entrepreneurs have focused on drone warfare, developing artificial intelligence-powered systems. Figures like Yaroslav Azhnyuk state that AI makes drones faster and more capable, providing an asymmetric advantage against disproportionate force.

Yaroslav Azhnyuk, the 37-year-old manager of Ukraine-based defense firms The Fourth Law and Odd Systems, is among the pioneers producing autonomous Lupynis-10-TFL-1 drones used on the battlefield. Used by dozens of Ukrainian military units, these systems combine small, affordable FPV drones with an autonomous terminal guidance unit. The AI and onboard computer on the drone take control during the final 500 meters (0.3 miles) of flight.

The microcomputer, which uses a deep-learning neural network, utilizes hours of combat footage to recognize vehicles, light armored vehicles, tanks, and flying objects. While the pilot lets go of the control stick, the drone flies toward the target it has locked onto. While Russia also uses AI-enabled drones against Ukraine, many people, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, express concerns that artificial intelligence could drive battlefield decisions in the coming year. Azhnyuk, on the other hand, argues that concerns about destructive weapons are not unique to artificial intelligence, having been with humanity since the invention of fire or steel.
