Waltham-based composer Tod Machover's new work titled "already and not yet", written for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and integrating artificial intelligence with a live orchestra performance, is meeting music lovers at Symphony Hall in Boston.

Consisting of three movements titled "Smash Up", "Wake Up" and "Stand Up", the piece makes its premiere by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductor Kent Nagano. Performances are scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, as well as a scheduled matinee.

The artificial intelligence system used in the work analyzes the characteristics of the live sound played by musicians to add variety and function as a connector without replacing human performers. Doctoral students Manaswi Mishra and Ana Schon from the Opera of the Future group at the MIT Media Lab worked on the development of this system.
