Treatment and Prevention Methods for Rabies Explained
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Doğan stated that initial intervention against stray animal scratches and bites, along with the rabies vaccine, is life-saving.
NKÜ Faculty of Medicine, Department of Infectious Diseases Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Doğan emphasized that preventive measures against rabies, which can be transmitted through stray animal scratches and bites, are of vital importance.
Rabies Risk and Initial Intervention
In the event of a scratch or bite by stray animals, the risk of rabies transmission arises when skin integrity is disrupted. Experts state that when faced with such a risk, the first step is to wash the wound thoroughly with plenty of soap and water for at least 10 minutes, working up a lather.
Application to a Healthcare Institution and Vaccination
Following the washing process, it is necessary to apply to the nearest healthcare institution without wasting time. Experts draw attention to the importance of performing wound care and immediately initiating rabies vaccine prophylaxis.
Delayed Cases and the Role of Families
In cases of suspected rabies, the vaccine must be administered without delay, even if a few days have passed. It is recommended that families educate their children on this issue and check for possible injuries.
Symptoms and Pet Vaccinations
It is emphasized that once disease symptoms appear, the vaccine is ineffective and the risk of death is high. It is also mandatory for pet owners to have their pets vaccinated regularly every year.
