Trump Invokes 9/11 in Urging Michigan Voters to Oppose Muslim Senate Candidate El-Sayed

During a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, US President Donald Trump targeted Democratic US Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and called for opposition to his candidacy.

At a rally in Michigan ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, US President Donald Trump compared Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed to the perpetrators of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Speaking at an event in Port Huron, Trump continued his accusations by noting that if El-Sayed wins, he would become the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. El-Sayed denied the allegations while drawing attention to Trump's frequent emphasis on his name during an event in Grand Rapids.

In the Michigan Senate race, Republican candidate and former Representative Mike Rogers is competing against El-Sayed. Speaking on NBC's "Meet the Press," Rogers stated that he did not characterize El-Sayed as a terrorist, but alleged that he has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Meanwhile, a day before Trump's speech in Eastern Michigan, former President Barack Obama had also held a rally in Detroit to support Democrats.
