Speaking at a campaign rally in Corpus Christi, Texas, US President Donald Trump claimed that Venezuela could potentially become the 51st state of the United States in the future. Trump made the statement while presenting a tanker brought from the country, which was stated to carry one million barrels of oil.

US President Donald Trump drew attention to the new energy agreement with Venezuela during his campaign rally in Corpus Christi, Texas. Arguing that the agreement made with the interim administration following Nicolás Maduro's removal from power in January would cover billions of barrels of oil, Trump stated that Venezuela would become a prosperous country and perhaps even the 51st state in the future.

It was stated that the urgency of this oil agreement stemmed from the war with Iran in February. Following Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 percent of the world's oil shipments pass, gasoline prices had risen nationwide.
