Trump Suspends Russia Sanctions for Peace Talks
US President Donald Trump announced that certain sanctions against Russia have been suspended in order to keep Moscow at the negotiating table.
US President Donald Trump announced that he has suspended certain Russian sanctions in order to pursue ongoing peace negotiations in the war between Russia and Ukraine and to avoid driving Moscow away from the bargaining table.
US President Donald Trump stated in a post on the Truth Social platform that he is conducting peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, expressing that he does not want to do anything that would foolishly drive Russia away from the bargaining table. This decision was made on Friday night, two days before the sanctions were set to take effect, following a deepening disagreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev described the decision as an "important and truly historic moment," while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio characterized the step as a 60-day pause during which potential economic impacts will be analyzed. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy criticized Trump's approach, arguing that siding with Vladimir Putin would be a historic mistake, and stated that Washington's agreement to import Russian diesel amounts to an investment in the war effort.
