For the first time in Southern Cyprus, a “trusted flagger” initiative is being implemented to detect hate speech on social media. As part of the work carried out in cooperation with Cyprus University of Technology and the Mediterranean Digital Media Observatory, complaints will be examined and reported to the relevant social media platforms.

A new mechanism is being put into operation in Southern Cyprus to combat cases of hate speech on social media. According to information reported by Haravgi and other newspapers, the statement regarding the issue was made during a meeting of the Greek Cypriot Parliament’s Human Rights Committee.

The implementation will be carried out in partnership with the Cyprus University of Technology and the Mediterranean Digital Media Observatory (MedDMO). Speaking at the committee, AKEL MP Christos Christofidis stated that citizens can apply to this institution acting as a trusted flagger for hate speech notifications. Following the examination of the applications, identified violations will be reported to the relevant social media company.
