Turkey's permanent daylight saving time on the US agenda
The permanent daylight saving time model, implemented in Turkey since 2016, is drawing attention with the 27 billion lira savings it has provided. US President Donald Trump has called for a similar regulation to be passed in the Senate, emphasizing the economic advantages of the practice.
The permanent daylight saving time practice, initiated in Turkey in 2016 for energy conservation and maintained for 10 years, has also been brought to the US agenda. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced that 13 billion kilowatt-hours of energy savings were achieved between October 2016 and March 2025, which corresponds to 27 billion liras at current electricity prices.
US President Donald Trump stated that the practice of changing clocks back and forth imposes a burden on the economy and argued that a transition to a permanent daylight saving time system should be made. Trump called for the bill in this direction to be approved by the Senate.
In Turkey, the practice was implemented during Berat Albayrak's tenure as Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. Albayrak had stated that the practice made significant contributions to efficiency gains and energy savings.
