Two Bangladeshis Executed in Saudi Arabia
Two Bangladeshi nationals were executed by ta'zir in the Mecca region of Saudi Arabia for a crime allegedly committed in a mosque. The Bangladesh government stated it was not notified in advance of the decision.
Two Bangladeshi nationals named Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, who were convicted over an immoral act that took place in a mosque in Saudi Arabia's Mecca region, were executed on October 14. A statement issued by the Saudi Ministry of Interior stated that the court sentenced the defendants to death under ta'zir, a form of discretionary punishment in Islamic law where the penalty and crime are left to the judge.
In the ministry statement published by the Saudi Press Agency, it was stated that the executed individuals were citizens of Bangladesh. Although some media reports indicated that these individuals were a married couple, there is no official confirmation as to whether they were married. The ministry statement did not include information on which mosque the incident took place in, what the act in question was, or when these individuals were detained.
Bangladesh's consulate in Jeddah stated that they were not notified in advance of the executions. Following this, Bangladesh sent an official note to the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs requesting details of the charges, the legal process, and official notification.
