US Policies and War Tensions in Ukraine
US President Donald Trump's efforts to restart peace talks with Russia and reduce aid to Ukraine are leading to harsh criticism in Kiev and an increase in humanitarian losses.
The contradiction between US President Donald Trump's statements on relations with Russia and peace negotiations, and the bitter realities on the ground in Ukraine, is growing.
On the day US President Donald Trump stated that Russia is in a good place regarding Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared a photograph taken after a Russian drone strike on a children's park in Dnipro. Fourteen-month-old Angelina and her mother Inna lost their lives in the attack.
These developments highlight the chasm between Trump's approach to the war and the humanitarian devastation on the ground in Ukraine. While the Trump administration has reduced aid to Ukraine by 99 percent, it is pursuing energy deals with Russia. On the other hand, Trump's peace envoy Steve Witkoff visited St. Petersburg and praised Russian President Vladimir Putin; immediately following this visit, Russia launched 21 ballistic missiles, including cluster munitions, at Kiev.
Ukrainian officials and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized the policy pursued by the US administration, describing it as a policy of appeasement. Officials pointed out that civilian casualties have increased significantly during this period of negotiation attempts.
