US President Trump Suspends Russia Sanctions and Tariffs
US President Donald Trump has postponed Russia-related sanctions and tariffs under the Lindsey Graham Act, citing national interests.
US President Donald Trump has suspended Russia's export-linked sanctions and tariffs, which were expected to affect countries like India and China, in the interest of national security just one day before they were set to take effect.
US President Donald Trump announced that he has postponed the Russia-related sanctions and tariff measures that were expected to come into effect under the legislation he signed last month. In the presidential decree published on Friday, it was stated that this exemption was granted due to the national interests of the US, and that the necessary notification regarding the matter was made to Congress.
While the issued directive only suspends the implementation of Russia-related tariffs, Trump's authority to reinstate these taxes in the future remains reserved.
The decision in question is based on the legislation named the 'Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026', which bears the name of Senator Lindsey Graham and was enacted last month. This law gave Trump a 30-day period to impose a 100 percent tariff on all goods from China, India, Slovakia, Hungary, and Azerbaijan—the top five buyers of Russian crude oil—as well as to apply sanctions to various Russian institutions. This decision, taken one day before the expiration of the one-month period, provided relief for the affected countries, particularly India and China.
