US Secretary of State Marco Rubio participated in the C5+1 ministerial meeting held on Monday in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, to develop economic, trade, and security relations with Central Asian countries.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks in Uzbekistan to strengthen trade and ties with Central Asia. The visit took place amidst criticism that America's top diplomat was turning away from urgent issues such as the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war in favor of lower-risk, politically safer visits, according to reports. The State Department pushed back against these criticisms. Rubio met with his counterparts from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan in Samarkand under the C5+1 diplomatic forum.
Speaking to the press ahead of the meeting, Rubio stated that the United States wants to be a strong partner in Central Asia, noting that the region has not received the attention it deserves from politicians over the past 20 years, but that this is changing. The visit is part of a tour that also includes a leg in India and was carried out with a large delegation including representatives from nearly 300 American businesses, it was noted. Rubio emphasized that Central Asia is a crossroads of trade between East and West and stands as a new investment hub where vital materials are supplied for the future of nations. Meanwhile, it was reported that the Trump administration wants to increase participation in the Abraham Accords—which envision Muslim-majority-countries establishing diplomatic relations with Israel—with the goal of involving other countries in the process, beyond Kazakhstan which previously recognized Israel.
