US stocks drop to their worst day since July as inflation worsens

As the latest inflation report released in US markets showed an acceleration in consumer price growth, indices recorded their sharpest daily decline since July, putting artificial intelligence-focused stocks under pressure.

General Decline in Indices

US stock markets suffered their steepest drop since July on Wednesday following recent developments pointing to worsening inflation. The S&P 500 index declined by 1.1%, marking its fifth loss in six days since reaching an all-time high.

While the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 48 points or 0.1%, the Nasdaq composite index lost 1.9% in value amid sell-offs led by the artificial intelligence sector.

Inflation Data and Expectations

The report, showing that prices paid by consumers for fuel, food, and other living costs last year were generally 3.7% higher than the previous year, heightened concerns in the markets.

This rate revealed an acceleration compared to August's inflation rate of 3.4% and came in above economists' expectations of 3.6%.

Bond Market and Interest Rate Expectations

While rising yields in the bond market exerted pressure on equities, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note briefly surged above 5.32% from just under 5.17% right before the inflation report was released.

Following these developments, investors and traders revised their expectations upward regarding the US Federal Reserve's potential future interest rate hikes.

Losses in Artificial Intelligence Stocks

A large portion of the losses on Wall Street stemmed from declines in the stocks of companies that achieved massive profit surges through the artificial intelligence rally. Higher bond yields make borrowing more expensive, which could make it harder for companies to secure financing.

While Nvidia lost 3.2%, Broadcom 3.1%, and Advanced Micro Devices 5.7%, CoreWeave fell by 15.5%, GE Vernova by 6.2%, and Oracle by 8.8%.

Weakness in Bank Stocks

Bank of America fell 4.8% following profit and revenue reports that fell short of analysts' expectations during the summer, as well as a $1.2 billion fine from the US Department of Treasury over alleged violations of anti-money laundering and sanctions laws.

State Street, another institution in the financial sector, lost 4.1% of its value following a weaker revenue announcement.
