US Stock Markets Experience Sharpest Drop Since July as Inflation Exceeds Expectations
Inflation rising to 3.7% in September and surging bond yields created selling pressure in the markets.
Following the release of United States September inflation data coming in higher than expected at 3.7%, the stock markets experienced their worst day since July.
Inflation Exceeds Expectations
According to the latest data released, fuel, food, and other living costs increased by 3.7% in September compared to the same period of the previous year. The inflation rate accelerated from the 3.4% level in August and exceeded economists' forecasts of 3.6%.
Bond Yields and Rate Hike Expectations
Following the inflation report, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note briefly surged above 5.32% in the bond market. Similar jumps occurred in short-term bonds as investors revised upward their expectations for future Federal Reserve rate moves.
Artificial Intelligence Sector and Stock Losses
The S&P 500 index declined by 1.1%, while the Nasdaq composite index lost 1.9% of its value, led by drops in artificial intelligence chip and infrastructure stocks. Company shares such as Nvidia, Broadcom, and Advanced Micro Devices played a decisive role in the decline of the index.
Banking Sector and Corporate Earnings
Bank of America declined under the weight of summer profits and revenues falling below expectations, along with $1.2 billion in penalties imposed by the U.S. Treasury Department. State Street also lost value following a weak quarterly earnings report.
