The state of Utah has launched three new artificial intelligence pilot projects to renew chronic condition prescriptions, write initial acne prescriptions, and provide virtual physical therapy services.
Zach Boyd, Director of the Utah Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy (OAIP), stated during a speech at the ADAPT conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico, that the state has fundamental questions to resolve as its AI sandbox model spreads nationwide. Boyd noted that they are working on regulatory standards and guidance, and preparing an accountability bill to establish the legal framework.
The state first launched its sandbox program in 2024 with a mental health support application, allowing companies to test new technologies in exchange for regulatory exemptions and state oversight. The program drew national attention this year in partnership with health tech company Doctronic, which allows AI to renew certain prescriptions under clinician supervision.
