Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado made a surprise return to Venezuela after nearly a year spent abroad and in hiding. Sharing the message "I am here. I am with all of you" on social media, Machado's return constitutes a new turning point in terms of the interim government and U.S. strategy.
Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has returned to her country following a period spent abroad since December. Using the phrases "I am here. I am with all of you" in a post on her social media account, Machado was welcomed by supporters at a church in Lara state and subsequently moved toward Caracas in a convoy. Fellow opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez also confirmed Machado's presence in a social media statement and indicated he would join her shortly.
The political landscape in the country continues under the leadership of Delcy Rodriguez, who has been serving as interim president following the removal of Nicolas Maduro from office. Machado's return is considered an important political test regarding the Rodriguez administration and U.S. strategy. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump stated in response to reporters' questions that he was not aware of Machado's return, but hoped for her safety.
